Motorsport’s bucket-list events

ONE DAY, hopefully sooner rather than later, the world is going to be in a place where we’re allowed to go and see cool things again – which brings us to the topic in question; which motorsport events are on your racing bucket list?

There’s so many incredible events in the racing world on the top of people’s must-do lists, so we thought we’d put it to Team The Race Torque on this week’s episode of our On the Grid podcast.

And didn’t it just draw out some fascinating events! With each of our four members offering up their top five bucket list events there was a potential for 20 different adventures to be featured – and we ended up with 18, which is a pretty good result, we think.

There’s some cracking events listed below that will surely help you fill out your own motorsport bucket list.

Have a listen to the podcast for further explanation, or drop us a note via our socials to let us know your bucket list events that are on the top of your must-do list.

RICHARD CRAILL @craillsy

  1. Pikes Peak International Hillclimb
  2. LeMans 24 Hour
  3. IndyCar Road America
  4. Rally Finland
  5. Goodwood Revival (Because Spitfires)

CRAILL’s list features a few surprises, including Rally Finland and also picking the Goodwood Revival over the Festival, mainly because, he argues, there’s more Spitfires which seems a valid level of reasoning to us. Indy Cars at Road America make a lot of sense given he’s already ticked the Indy500 off the list; Road America is one of the best Road Courses in the world and IndyCar is flying at the moment, so why not.

Craill argued that the legendary Pikes Peak Hillclimb narrowly pipped the LeMans 24 Hour on the top of the roster for reasons of sketchiness alone, and that LeMans made the list because one day he’ll go and call it for our friends at RadioLeMans.com if and when travel ever occurs again and it doesn’t clash with Darwin.. which would have been on his list had he not already been there.

MARK WALKER @markwa1ker

  1. GP Ice Race
  2. Reno Air Race
  3. NHRA 4-wide nationals
  4. Collie Motorplex
  5. Bristol NASCAR night race

WALKER, as always, is pitching from well left field here. For example, Perth’s other race track, the little Collie Motorplex circuit a few hours south of the WA capital, features here. It’s a fact that it’s the first time it has ever featured in anyone’s bucket list, ever! So, well done to Collie, which made the list because, Mark argued, it’s the only track he’s not visited in Australia, which is fair enough. Bristol’s night time NASCAR show is an obvious selection, the four-wide Nationals in Charlotte sells itself because what’s better than two Top Fuel Cars? Four of them, naturally.

The Reno air race is remarkably perilous and despite being held in the air still counts for that reason alone, while if you don’t know what the GP Ice Race is, you need to Google it now. In the meantime, we’ll let the following photo do the talking.

DALE RODGERS @DaleRodgers27

  1. Indianapolis 500
  2. Wales Rally GB
  3. Daytona 500
  4. Monaco Grand Prix
  5. Canadian Grand Prix

DALE has been around the game long enough to visit some pretty special events, but remarkably during his tenure selling most of Australian Motorsport their racing apparel, he still missed a couple of big ‘uns. That’s why the Indy 500 tops the list, as it should for any racing fan who has never been there because it really is one of the best things in motorsport, anywhere. Likewise Daytona, and Monaco, while Wales Rally GB jumps high on Dale’s list because it’s cool, obviously.

A pleasant surprise was Dale’s addition of the Canadian Grand Prix, which is always a cracker. The Montreal circuit is a beauty, the race is always dramatic and lends itself to great racing and word from people who have visited is that the city goes off during race week – all good reasons to add it to the list.

TONY SCHIBECI @TheSchibecsta

  1. Daytona 500
  2. Isle of Man TT
  3. Dakar Rally
  4. Bathurst 12 Hour
  5. LeMans 24 Hour

TONY has some glaring omissions from his racing hit list that he hopes to fix one day, with the Daytona 500 at the top of his list. While several of our crew shortlisted the TT without it making their Top 5, Tony has it near the top of his charts and justifiably so – it’s one of the all-time great events and remains so to this day. Likewise Dakar, which despite regularly shifting countries and terrain remains the world’s peak desert race.

Somehow Schibecs has never made it to Australia’s International Enduro, so the Bathurst 12 Hour is the only time that the Mountain makes it to our list. LeMans rounds out Tony’s selection, so we feel a group trip coming at some point down the road. Anyone want to sponsor that?
