Throwback: Winton Shannons

The Shannons Nationals, now the Shannons SpeedSeries, has sure come a long way since 2010. Back 13 years ago, the second-tier platform rolled into Winton Raceway with a decidedly more low-key program than that which will greet race fans this weekend. The highlight category on the program was the Commodore Cup, which featured a pair of two-driver 45min mini-enduros, featuring drivers such as Lee Holdsworth, Paul Morris, Steve Owen, Ryan McLeod and more. The V8 Touring Cars turned out one of their best fields to that date for the category, with the schedule filled with a Production Sports Cars enduro,

Le Mans Diary #4 – Le Museum

THINGS are getting busy at Le Mans as we count down to the commencement of track activities, officially, on Wednesday local time. The vibe is building and after what must have been 70,000 people attending the test day on Sunday even more people are rolling into the circuit now. Tuesday is packed – there’s no circuit activity however the official pit stop competition in pit lane keeps fans engaged. In the enormous ‘Village’ activation area adjacent to pit lane, every retailer is open and doing a brisk trade. The official stores are busy and relaxed and the gear is really

LeMans Diary #3 – Le Pesage

IF THERE is one thing I'm stealing from this event to bring back home, it's Le Pesage - the two day extravaganza in the middle of Le Mans city where every single car, driver and team go through their mandatory checks prior to hitting the circuit. We have a simplified version back home - the Bathurst 12 Hour's Track to Town is as close as we come - but Pesage is much more involved, much more interactive and utterly fantastic. Loosely translated, Pesage means 'weighing' which essentially is the basis of all things scrutineering. DAY 1 DIARY - Road to

The Road More Travelled: Excels to Supercars

The ultimate challenge for any aspiring race car driver who aims for the top is picking the right path to be armed with the credentials to turn pro. Once upon a time, Formula Ford was the obvious route, it was the one-stop solution from karting – win the national title, get picked up a V8 squad, and you’re set for life. In more modern times, the options and paths have become more polluted and confusing. F4 came and went, then there is the Porsche pathway, which ultimately is perfectly suited to sending youngsters on a route to international sports cars.

LeMans diary #2 – right car, right time

THE FERRARI 499P, the Scuderia’s return to top-flight Sports Car racing and outright competition at La Sarthe, has an underfloor that looks like it’s lifted directly from their Formula One car. The Porsche’s are stunningly detailed: the multi-coloured livery with nods to their most famous schemes of old adding a brightness to the already perfectly presented trio of 963s as is suitable for an outfit run by both Le Captain, Roger Penske, and Stuttgart itself. DAY 1 DIARY - Road to Le Mans The madhouse Peugeot 9X8, with it’s rear wing MIA and enormously sculpted and tuned underbody looks like

Remembering Archerfield

This weekend will be a sad one for speedway fans, with Archerfield Speedway’s 44-year run as Brisbane’s premier oval coming to a close, with two big nights celebrating “The Last Race.” Situated adjacent to Archerfield Airport in the city’s south, for many years there has been speculation over the venue’s long-term future. Archerfield's fate was sealed at Christmas time with confirmation of its sale, although the current season was allowed to wrap up. This gallery was captured around the turn of the century, and since then, precious little has changed to the amenities around the 400m clay oval. The question
