Australian Formula Open Calendar confirmed

The inaugural Australian Formula Open Series calendar has been released with a mixture of state level and national events for its first full season.

After a successful launch at Island Magic in November, which saw 28 cars on the grid, AFO looks to build on the success of that event and bring ‘wings and slicks’ open wheel racing in Australia into a new era.

As well as directly replacing the Australian Formula 3 Championship; the class caters for Formula 4, TRS FT50, Formula Renault and other junior open wheel categories with its class structure, with Formula 3 machinery being the top class.

The category aims to provide a place for kids to apply their craft before heading overseas and to provide a platform for cars that haven’t had a place to race.

Starting in March, AFO will feature on the AGI NSW Formula Race car bill for rounds 1 and 2, with AFO events then taking in the Asian Super Trofeo event at The Bend, Motorsport Australia Trophy Series at Queensland Raceway, Speed Series Sandown and will again headline the 2023 Island Magic event.

“This calendar has a great mix of state and national events which offer a great start for this category moving forward, it’s really exciting and I can’t wait for the year to start,” said AFO founder, Tim Macrow

“Hats off to Motorsport Australia who have been really supportive from the start and have played a massive role in getting this category off the ground.”

AFO organisers are currently in negotiations with commercial partners, with awards and prizes announced in the new year.
